What Takes Place In The Sleep Lab

There will be two patients scheduled for sleep studies each night and the technician will moniter both patients. Typically, one patient comes at 9 P.M., and the other patient comes at 9:30 P.M. The patients will be greeted by the sleep technologists.

After reviewing the relevant clinical history from the patient, they will be taken to one of the sleep rooms and technologists will explain the procedure.

The technicians will measure the head and decide on where they want to put the electrodes to receive the brain waves. The technician will scrub the scalp area where the gold or silver electrodes will be placed with a conductive EEG paste. Then a piece of gauze will be placed and a glue type material called collodion will be put on top of the gauze. These will be dried by a hair dryer. This will secure the electrodes so that the electrodes will not be pulled out in the night from patient movement.

Technician will also place electrodes on the side of the eyelids. This is to record eye movement. Then the air flow sensors will be placed on the nose to measure the flow of air, in and out. Snore mic will be placed on the neck to measure the amount of snoring. EKG leads will be placed on the heart to record electro cardiogram.
