Sleep Apnea
There are two basic patterns of breathing disturbances during sleep.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea: This is the most common form of sleep apnea. The
symptoms of sleep apnea are as follows:
Excessive day time sleepiness
Loud snoring and gasping
Morning Headache
Memory Problems
Excessive movements while asleep
Enuresis (bed wetting)
Sexual problems / impotence
Personality, mood changes
Central Sleep Apnea: In this form of sleep apnea airway may stay open but
the diaphragm and chest muscle stop working. Low oxygen level signals the brain to awaken
the person and restart breathing. CSA is more common with age, 1 in 4 people age 60 or
older experience disturbed breathing during sleep. If severe it can cause low oxygen
concentration in the brain, which can lead to Congestive Heart Failure or Neurological
problems.
